A DRAFT timetable for the setting up of anti-dumping and countervailing duties by the United States, on softwood lumber from Canada, has been released by the US International Trade Administration. It says that the American Department of Commerce will probably start inquiries on April 23, making a preliminary judgement on anti-dumping by September 10 and countervailing duties by June 27, a final judgement on November 26 and September 10, respectively, with duties being imposed on January 10 next year and this November 1.…

A REPORT has been released by the OECD, on the impact on the trade in agricultural goods of the WTO’s Uruguay Round. It says that its effect “has been limited,” noting that: “agricultural tariffs remain high.” The report says that average bound tariffs on agricultural products are still over 40 per cent, compared to 4 per cent for manufactured goods.…

A REPORT release by the International Labour Organisation has claimed that EU hotel, catering and tourism workers earn on average 20 per cent below the European Union average for workers in other sectors. Together, the hotel, catering and tourist sectors produce 3-4 per cent of gross domestic product in most countries worldwide, according to the ILO, but most of their workers are unskilled, in part-time or low-wage jobs.…
