SHIFT TO RENEWABLE ENERGY AND ELECTRIC CARS WILL SHIFT MINERAL MARKETS FOR DECADES, CONFERENCE HEARS
THE GROWTH in global renewable energy and electric car markets is already changing the face of the industrial minerals sector and it will continue to shape demand for years to come, a senior Toronto-based industry conference has been told.
Vancouver-based Gianni Kovacevic, CEO of CopperBank Resources, told this year’s Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) convention that mineral resource companies needed to analyse the likely impact of climate change, and how it feeds into energy and transport infrastructure spending and related environmental regulation.…
OSLO AIRPORT EXPANSION FOCUSES ON ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE
NORWAY’s key transport hub, Oslo Airport, has almost doubled in size between 2012 and the completion of an expansion project last April (2017), delivering an impressive 43% fewer CO2 emissions despite the growth in facilities.
Taking a holistic approach and reviewing every stage of the now Norwegian Krone NOK14 billion (USD1.4 billion) project for eco-wins, Oslo was the first airport to be awarded an ‘excellent’ rating under the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) sustainability assessment in 2017, under a scheme administered by the UK-based Building Research Establishment. …

Speaking in the City of London, she said: “We will also want to explore with the EU, the terms on which the UK could remain part of EU agencies…” And while not naming EFSA, she said – in theory – she was prepared to allow the UK to be bound by the rules of EU agencies, post-Brexit. …

BRAZIL LOSES COMMANDING POSITION IN GLOBAL TOBACCO LEAF MARKETS OVER PAST 10 YEARS, WTO DATA SHOWS
THE IMPORTANCE of Brazil as the world’s top supplier of internationally-traded tobacco leaf and manufactured products has been waning for the past decade, with India, notably, improving its position. New statistical analysis released by the World Trade Organisation (WTO) shows that this market share fall for Brazil also represented a decline in volume sales, given the global trade in tobacco leaf and products has shrunk since 2013 – until 2016, the year for which the latest data is available.…

THE EUROPEAN Investment Bank (EIB) is planning to lend Euro EUR100 million to Georgia to convert a depleted oil field at the Samgori South Dome, in the east of the country, into an underground storage facility for natural gas. The goal, said an EIB note, is to increase security of energy supply in Georgia during supply disruptions and “secure peak and seasonal demand of household and electricity producers without increasing Georgia’s dependency on its single and key supplier (Azerbaijan)”.…

INDIA’S 12 newly sanctioned nuclear reactors with 9,000-megawatt (MW) capacity may use imported fuel, but most of the equipment will be made in India, government officials have told Fuel Cycle Week.
“We will see what is the maximum [amount of fuel] we can get from within the country and then what will be the external input of fuel,” Malur Ramaswamy Srinivasan, member of India’s Atomic Energy Commission, told Fuel Cycle Week.…
