ITALIAN CLOTHING MANUFACTURERS FACE SHORT-TERM DISRUPTION AND MEDIUM-TERM SALES OVER COVID-19
WHILE clothing manufacturers within Italy have not been told to close outright in the country’s bid to fight the Covid-19 virus, many have been subject to major disruption during this health emergency. A drop in demand for clothing and textiles in China and the cancellation of fairs and missions both abroad and in Italy have hit brands hard, with events being called off and many catwalk shows at Milan Fashion Week (18-24 Feb 2020) having taken place behind closed doors as the virus outbreak gathered strength.…
AML/CFT HIGHER LEARNING AND TRAINING STILL DEVELOPING AND MERGING - INTERNATIONALLY ACCEPTED MODELS YET TO COALESCE
ANTI-money laundering maybe a career that financial and legal professionals increasingly follow, but the training and qualification structure for AML/CFT is still emerging and solidifying, and there are doubts whether it will ever coalesce into a formal global structure, akin to FATF recommendations.…
EU ROUND UP – ECHA PUSHES PRODUCTION OF BIOCIDAL INGREDIENTS USED IN COATINGS TO FIGHT COVID-19
THE EUROPEAN Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has encouraged the European Union (EU) chemical industry to employ biocidal products widely used within the coating sector to make detergents killing Covid-19. ECHA has released compositional requirements for using these chemicals to aid national regulatory checks on products including coatings ingredients propan-1-ol and propan-2-ol, whose production might for the time being be diverted to detergent manufacture.…
EUROPEAN COMMISSION RELEASES BLUEPRINT FOR FUTURE EU-UK ENERGY RELATIONS
THE EUROPEAN Commission has released a blueprint for negotiations on agreeing a permanent relationship between the European Union (EU) and the UK, which would forge energy relations that are as close as possible, given Britain is to quit the single European energy market.…
GLOBAL ENERGY POLICIES TRANSFORM, ADOPTING SUSTAINABLE GOALS AS CLIMATE CHANGE CONCERNS GROW
SLOWLY, but steadily, the world’s energy policies are turning green, towards promoting a sustainable future, targeting an increasingly universal goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050. With evidence mounting not only that climate change is accelerating, but potentially wreaking serious damage on the world’s economies and peoples, the Paris Agreement goal of holding the rise in global temperatures to well below 2C trying to limit it to 1.5C is being reflected in the plans of governments, regional and international organisations.…
EUROMONITOR INTERNATIONAL SAYS NICOTINE CONSUMPTION IS FALLING
Nicotine consumption is declining worldwide, with smokers are consuming less, as well as e-cigarette and heated tobacco users, according to market research provider Euromonitor International’s ‘Nicotine Survey, Exploring the Modern Nicotine Landscape’.
“Overall [the study] shows nicotine prevalence is declining not growing, and it is clear to see there isn’t much evidence that greater availability of nicotine formats is increasing smoking prevalence among adults,” said Shane MacGuill, head of tobacco research at Euromonitor International, in a webinar attended by TJI.…
ECOMMERCE TOBACCO AND VAPE DELIVERIES INCREASE – BUT IS THERE AN ENVIRONMENTAL COST
Ecommerce is becoming an increasingly popular way to order tobacco-related products, especially e-cigarettes and vapes, but are such single-item shipments contributing to more carbon emissions and packaging waste than buying in-store or kiosk? E-commerce accounts for an increasingly large slice of the global retail market, growing 28% in 2017, 22.9% in 2018 and by 20.7% in 2019, to USD3.535 trillion, and forecast to reach USD4.2 trillion in 2020, according to eMarketer’s Global Ecommerce Forecast 2019.…

ZAMBIAN GOVERNMENT IN BIND – HAVING TO STEER BETWEEN FCTC AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT POLICIES THAT INVOLVE TOBACCO PRODUCTION AND MANUFACTURE
ZAMBIA’S government is caught between enforcing World Health Organisation (WHO)-sponsored tobacco control regulations and pushing an economic strategy which touts tobacco leaf as a key component of its goal to transform the Zambian economy to upper middle-income status by 2030. Zambia signed and ratified the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) in 2008 and has since been working to implement its provisions, although progress has been slow.…
ETHIOPIA’S TEXTILE AND CLOTHING SECTOR MUST GET SMARTER WITH INVESTMENT TO THRIVE IN THE LONG TERM SAYS INDUSTRY ASSOCIATION
ETHIOPIA’S clothing and textile sector needs to invest in creating a reliable quality domestic supply chain to grow and meet government targets for expanding export sales, a senior official at the Ethiopian Textile and Garment Association (ETGAMA) has told just-style.
Sintayehu Teshome, a textile and garment engineer working for this organisation representing more than 120 medium and large companies said that despite government incentives such as the construction of industrial parks and generous investment lease policies, as well as Ethiopia’s low labour costs, the sector still has many challenges to overcome to fulfill its potential.…
