A HIGH-LEVEL meeting of the Montreal Protocol controlling ozone-depleting chemicals has reviewed data on the use of CFC’s by developing countries, concluding that while most are in compliance, 25 of 136 had increased their consumption in 1999.

Participants from more than 100 countries took part in the meeting, in Sri Lanka, the latest in a regular schedule which makes THE protocol a dynamic and constantly-changing system of global regulation, rather than a static treaty that could become outdated.…

ROTHMANS Inc.,(Canada), has bought 100 per cent of Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company’s shares for US$275 million.

The purchase price comprises of US$105 million in cash, 4,241,312 common shares of Rothmans, having an ascribed value of US$65 million, and US$105 million in bonds to be issued at closing by Santa Fe and to be repaid over four years from Santa Fe’s operating cash flows.…

THE USA takes more scientists and engineers from Britain than from any other country in the western industrial world, according to the latest Science, Technology and Industry indicators published by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.

The report shows that 7,086 scientists and engineers from the UK are at present employed in the US, followed by 5,351 from Canada, 2,298 from Germany and 1,843 from Korea.…

THE UNITED States has been told it should scrap or amend safeguard restrictions on the amount of combed cotton yarn that can be imported from Pakistan, by the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organisation’s disputes settlement procedures.

THE EUROPEAN Commission has blocked the planned takeover by London-based CVC Capital Partners Group Ltd, (CVC), of Austrian man-made fibres manufacturer Lenzing AG. Because CVC already controls Acordis, Lenzing’s principal rival in Europe, and only rival in the United States, Brussels has ruled that a merged company would have a dominant position in a number of fibres markets, that could “reduce choice and lead to higher prices for customers and end consumers.”…

THE INTERNATIONAL Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) is planning to strengthen current aviation security standards in place, in response to terrorist attacks, which occurred in the United States. A high level meeting will take place before the New Year to discuss setting global rules on security issues such as cockpit door locking and making domestic regulations as tight as international flights.…
