EAST Asian shipping companies are expected to receive a boost from the ratification by China of the Bangkok Agreement, making one of Asia’s oldest trade accords the world’s largest in terms of market potential.

With China joining the arrangement – which is based on shared trade preferences – it becomes the largest regional trade arrangement, opening up a market with a combined population of more than 2.5 billion, said the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific, (ESCAP).…

LOYOLA de Palacio, vice-president of the European Commission warmly welcomed today’s (Thursday) IMO agreement and confirmed that the 15 EU member states would implement their right to deny single-hull oil tanker access to their ports from 2015.

INTERPOL has launched an international 24-hour early warning system, which can alert the world’s police forces to an Internet emergency sparked by cybercrime, such as the circulation of a dangerous virus, such as the love-bug ‘worm.’ The system enables the global police agency to mobilise resources in any time-zone, alerting public authorities, which can in turn warn private companies of any risks.…

AZURIX, the troubled water subsidiary of the giant energy company Enron, has confirmed that it would like to sell its north American water interests.

Azurix has a company policy of not commenting on its plans for acquisitions or divestments, but the potential sale of its north American subsidiary was revealed when it put in a bid to develop a US$150million water treatment plant that would eventually form part of a US$2billion distribution system in Houston Texas, home to the corporate headquarters of both companies.…

A DISPUTE over tax revenue for the 7,860 acres of Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport has yet to be settled and could hold up a proposed development of services. The airport – owned by Dallas and Fort Worth – wants to develop its services on land in the neighbouring city of Grapevine, but wants its authorities to split revenue from new development equally with its two large neighbours.…
