A GROUP of cotton exporting countries are resisting a move by the United States to dilute the mandate of the World Trade Organisation's (WTO) cotton sub-committee, formed to find agreement on this sensitive issue during the WTO Doha Development Round. India, Egypt, Brazil, Argentina, Pakistan, Paraguay and China want the sub-committee to focus on slashing export and production subsidies, while the US wants it to also consider related issues, such as market access barriers and state assistance to synthetics fibre producers.
