WORLD BANK DISCOURAGES JORDAN TEXTILE INDUSTRY GROWTH

BY KEITH NUTHALL A REPORT from the World Bank has questioned whether Jordan should continue to back the growth of its textile and clothing industry with significant public money and policy backing. The paper noted that Jordanian textile and textile product exports rose from USD50 million annually before 1999 to USD1 billion in 2010. That year, the share of Jordan's overall low-technology exports commanded by these products was 18% in 2010, up from 10.4% in 2003, albeit with a significant increase in 2006 to 27.5%.
