Keith NuthallTHE NUMBER of women seafarers working in the world's merchant navies is on the rise, but female ship workers still face discrimination and a lack of tailored facilities, an International Labour Organisation report has said. It claims women make up between one and two per cent of the world's 1.25 million seafarers, on around 87,000 ships. The proportion varies amongst countries, however. In some Scandinavian countries more than 10 per cent of seafarers are women, in Italy it is just 1.2 per cent, Germany 4.2 per cent and Britain 8.3 per cent. Outside ...
