BY MONICA DOBIE THE NUMBER of West Nile virus cases in the United States may reach epidemic proportions this year according to US government researchers after health authorities reported four times more cases than last year. Then, there were 4,269 cases in the US. So far this year, 122 cases have been reported; while this time last year, there had been 33 cases. The majority of 2007 US cases have been in California, as well as North and South Dakota in the mid-west.
