WATER utilities involved in development work overseas can now tap a Euro 1 billion budget approved last week (22-3) by the European Union (EU) Council of Ministers, earmarked for water and sanitation projects in African, Caribbean and Pacific island developing countries. Euro 250 million will be spent this year, with final decisions on releasing the remainder being taken by March 2005 following assessments of this year's projects.
