BY ALAN OSBORNAFTER twenty years of haggling, a deal on wine has been reached by the European Union (EU) and the United States under which the EU will accept existing American wine-making practices such as adding malic acid to correct deficient acidity (common in California) and the use of oak wood chips during ageing. Brussels said it would also recognise US wine place names, or appellations, such as Napa Valley and would permit US winemakers to use "traditional expressions" like château, late bottled vintage, noble, superior and vintage character.
