UNECE TUNNEL SAFETY

KEITH NUTHALLTHE UNITED Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) is about to complete its own recommendations on safety improvements in long road tunnels. Its proposals include roadside checks on lorries to detect overheating and also rules on the amount of fuel carried through tunnels.Work on new standards started at the UNECE following the Mont Blanc and Tauern disasters in 1999; it is an ironic coincidence that they will be formally released later this month, following the blaze at St Gotthard.Other recommendations will include the need for information ...
