UK LAW COMMISSION PROPOSES FIXING BROKEN CRIMINAL ASSET RECOVERY SYSTEM

A legislative watchdog has recommended wholesale reforms to how the UK confiscates the proceeds of crime from convicts, helping compensate victims. The current confiscation system has been criticised for being unwieldy and ineffective. Indeed, a detailed paper released by the UK Law Commission noted that in March 2021, only 6.1% of the GBP2.35 billion (USD2.67 billion) outstanding confiscation orders made under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 were recoverable.
