BY MONICA DOBIETHE EUROPEAN Commission is be investigating trends in Syrian cotton exports which have been booming since 1996, when sales went from almost nil in 1996 to 10 per cent of the EU's total cotton yarn imports in 2000.The EU suspects this surge in the cotton trade could partly be due to the funnelling through Syria of yard in third countries with fewer trade privileges with the EU. Brussels will launch an inquiry with the Syrian authorities to discuss any unusual facts regarding the exports in question.Also, a monitoring system will be introduced, ...
