BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EUROPEAN Commission has proposed that the European Union (EU) continue collating statistics on the EU steel sector, but that it considerably reduces their scope from what was collected for the now defunct European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC). The monthly series of figures on employment in steel works will be discontinued, however, old statistical work on production and sales of steel products, will be absorbed into the existing general EU system of production statistics, Prodcom.
