STATE OF EMERGENCY DECLARED IN LATVIA AFTER AFRICAN SWINE FEVER OUTBREAK

Latvia became the third EU state to report instances of African swine fever after 13 wild boar and four farmed pigs tested positive for the disease. This is the first instance of the African swine fever in the country following outbreaks in nearby Poland and Lithuania in January.  Yesterday (July 3), the Latvian government declared a state of emergency and issued a 5,000 square kilometres quarantine area in the southern area of Latvia, bordering Belarus and Lithuania.
