BY PHILIP FINE A US court dismissed an attempt by Philip Morris USA to overturn a patent for a curing method that reduces toxins; the cigarette giant is simultaneously being sued by the inventor of the process for infringing on that patent. Virginia-based tobacco company Star Scientific was issued Patent 649 in March 2001 by the US Patent and Trademark Office, for developing a non-chemical process that reduces one of the natural carcinogens in tobacco, while not affecting the tobacco's colour, taste or level of nicotine.
