SOUTH AFRICAN GOLD

THE CHAMBER of Mines of South Africa has reported that the country's gold output for the first quarter of 2003 was down 2.7 per cent at 92,314 kilograms when compared to the same quarter in 2002 and was down 6.8 per cent when compared to the fourth quarter 2002. A spokesman for the chamber said that on a quarter-on-quarter basis there had been a decline of 7.2 per cent in production on average over the past five years.
