THE BIG question with solar energy is whether it will become sufficiently profitable for major utilities to provide comprehensive services. After all, solar energy is more abundant than all other renewable resources; it's free and it can be harnessed almost anywhere in the world. And the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA) estimates that the solar radiation reaching the earth's surface in one year provides more than 10,000 times the world's yearly energy needs.
