INTERNATIONAL rules preventing ships from dumping untreated sewage into coastal waters have been ratified into force nearly 30 years after being negotiated. These amendments to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships say international ferries can only discharge untreated sewage more than 12 nautical miles from the nearest land.
