BY RICHARD HURSTA REPORT from the South African Department of Minerals and Energy (DME) has said that the safety performance of the South African mining sector has shown a steady improvement. Overall deaths in the industry were 288 in 2002, compared with 285 for 2001. The key gold sector was by far the largest in respect of fatalities and injuries, however, its 174 deaths and 3,268 injuries were an improvement on 2001's 182 deaths and 3,374 injuries.
