RUSSIAN WOMEN SMOKERS ON THE RISE SAYS STUDY

BY MONICA DOBIE

THE NUMBER of Russian women smokers has more than doubled since the collapse of the USSR, according to research published in the academic journal Tobacco Control. In 1992, 7% of women smoked, compared to 15% by 2003. The number of men went up by 5% to 63%. The study cites the privatisation of the tobacco industry and heavy marketing by transnational tobacco companies for the increase. Between 1992 and 2000, TTC's invested approximately US$1.7 billion to gain a 60% share of the Russian tobacco market.
