PROPOSED DOHA DEAL INDICATES ON COMING MAJOR LIBERALISATION OF WORLD FOOD MARKETS

BY KEITH NUTHALL DETAILED proposals aimed at ending the long-running World Trade Organisation (WTO) Doha Development Round food liberalisation food talks were released this afternoon (Tue 17-7). Negotiation chairman Crawford Falconer released formulas for cutting tariffs and trade-distorting production subsidies, whose range are much narrower than in last year's ill-fated proposals which sparked the talks' suspension. As regards food production subsidies, Falconer has proposed the EU cuts by 75% or 85%; the US and Japan 66% or 73%; and other countries 50% or 60%. ...
