ALTHOUGH it has been likened to a 21st century Silk Road, the southern gas corridor is currently making painstaking and troubled progress; inching its way through the political and economic strife that stands between the Caspian Sea and Western Europe.
At stake is Europe's desire to lessen its over-reliance on Russian gas. But, while a pipeline can only travel in one direction, the final deals will be a decidedly two-way affair, depending largely on what the country of Azerbaijan feels it can obtain in return.
