BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EUROPEAN Union's (EU) scientific committee on health and environmental risks has backed warnings from national EU studies into the safety of phenol that the cosmetics ingredient is a potential mutagen. As a result, both consumers of products containing phenol and workers handling the substance need to be protected from its effects, said the committee.
