OIE BIRD FLU CONFERENCE

A GLIMMER of optimism about bird flu has emerged from an international conference on the disease held by the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation and the Office International des Épizooties (OIE) world animal health organisation. Although wild birds could be a long-term - maybe a permanent - carrier, the virus "may subside naturally as infected animals die off, or it may mutate to a less aggressive form," said a conference communuqué.
