BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EXEMPTION enjoyed by the Norwegian mining industry to a tax on electricity consumption has been found to be illegal state aid by the European Free Trade Area (EFTA) Surveillance Authority, which has ordered the repayment of this de facto subsidy. At least the minimum rate of 0.5 Euro per MWh stipulated in the Europen Union (EU) energy tax directive should be handed over, said the authority; this EU legislation applies in Norway, because it is a member of the European Economic Area (EEA).
