SPECIALISTS at the Office International des Épizooties (OIE), the world animal health organisation, are continuing investigations into apparently unlinked outbreaks of "atypical" BSE strains in Italy and Japan to establish whether or not they are new strains of the disease. Thus far the OIE does not believe current protection methods should be changed.
