CONCERNS about needlestick injuries to nurses and other health workers have inspired the European Parliament to invoke a rarely-used legal procedure to formally call on the European Commission to table reforms. The parliament's social affairs committee has adopted a report calling for action. Its author, north-east England Labour MEP Stephen Hughes said existing European Union (EU) directives should in theory cover these risks, but "have not had the desired effect".
