Mongolia wants to increase the sustainability of its cashmere industry through more vertical integration – processing cashmere into premium finished garments locally. And it also wants to reduce the national herd to sustainable levels from a current high of 30 million. In short, the national cashmere sector wants to stress quality over quantity. But to achieve this, financial support maybe needed from the government and development agencies to reduce the temptation among herders to secure high prices for their cashmere from buyers in neighbouring China.
