MINISTERS AND MEPS STRIKE DEAL OVER AVIATION EMISSIONS TRADING

AN AGREEMENT has been struck over how to incorporate aviation emissions within the European Union's (EU) carbon trading scheme. Representatives of the European Parliament and the EU Council of Ministers have agreed a compromise that should be formally approved. It includes that all flights starting or landing in Europe (including intercontinental flights) be included in the trading system from 2012; also, 85% of the emissions certificates will be allocated to airlines for free, with just 15% being auctioned.
