ONE of the first responses to concerns about climate change involved the search to sequester carbon, a component of the major greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. Increasingly, efforts are focussing on how to deal with another greenhouse gas, methane. Although not as prevalent as carbon dioxide, methane is at least 21 times more potent as a greenhouse gas. As a result, a sizeable industry is developing around methane recovery. The main areas of focus are the three major sources of methane emissions: livestock, mines, and landfills.
