BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EUROPEAN Commission has proposed banning exports from the European Union (EU) of mercury by the year 2011, under a comprehensive strategy to stifle the poisonous metal's use in Europe and elsewhere. Brussels has also proposed that EU national governments make diplomatic efforts to control the mercury trade internationally and prevent its use in industries such as gold mining.
