AMERICANS seem to be falling out of love with the mall. The large shopping centres that became the favorite piazza of the suburban dweller are now being blamed for sagging retail sales. Jewellers Zale and Whitehall, shoe retailer Footstar and children's clothing maker OshKosh B'Gosh have all blamed poor mall traffic for recent sales slumps. The main culprits for the apparent decline in footfall are the growth in so-called big box stores, the large warehouse-like operations, many of which offer one-stop shopping for the time-pressed consumer. ...
