Although the amount of subsidy has yet to be agreed, the aid promise prompted Vilnius to announce the closure of unit 1 before 2005 and unit 2 by 2009.During negotiations on Lithuania's application for EU membership, its government has been under intense pressure to close the 1500 RBMK-type units because of safety concerns.
