INCOMING European Union (EU) health and consumer affairs Commissioner Markos Kyprianou could defy expectations that he would rest on the laurels of his predecessor David Byrne in fighting the tobacco industry. In his answers to a European Parliament questionnaire, the Cypriot pushing for more national bans on smoking in public places. In his questionnaire response, he wanted to see the bans in Ireland, Malta and Sweden extended "throughout the EU, by the end of my mandate" via "cooperation at EU as well as the national level".
