JUDGES SAY EU POULTRY RETAILERS MUST ENSURE SAFETY OF THIRD PARTY-PACKAGED AND MANUFACTURED PRODUCTS

European Union (EU) poultry retailers may be penalised if they sell salmonella-contaminated fresh products, even when they are processed and packaged by another company, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) has ruled. Its judgement came in a case involving an Austrian supermarket and local food safety authorities. They spot-checked a Tyrol branch of MPREIS Warenvertriebs and found that a vacuum-packed fresh turkey breast contained salmonella.
