The low level of food self-sufficiency (40%), which has always been something of a national obsession, looks positively healthy when compared to the 16% level for energy. Among the major industrial powers only Italy has a lower percentage. If the nuclear component of the nation's electricity production is removed from the equation, the self-sufficiency level drops to around 4%. ...
