BY KEITH NUTHALLTHE EUROPEAN Commission has won a case at the European Court of Justice which declares illegal any intervention by national European Union governments to limit the liberty of motor insurance companies to set the price of their premiums. Judges ruled that a temporary freeze imposed by the Italian government on compulsory motor insurance rates broke the EU's 1992 directive on direct insurance.
