BY ALAN OSBORN and MARK ROWEIN the space of some five years, biofuels have grown from almost total insignificance in the European Union (EU) to becoming the only practical alternative to petrol as a fuel for motor vehicles and much else - albeit still at a very low level. In the early years of the decade biofuels were a distinctly marginal fuel. Only five of the then 15 member states had any kind of direct experience with them and their share of the total EU fuel market was only 0.3%.
