PARALLEL research projects are being staged by the European Union (EU) and Europe's automobile industry to create sophisticated sensor devices that can cut road accidents. The EU's INTRO project is seeking to ensure vehicle-based sensors - that can detect an obstacle on the road and warn drivers - are compatible with roadside sensors relaying additional information to motorists, such as pavement usage.
