THE INDIAN government is publicly discussing plans to introduce a nationwide uniform sales tax on petroleum products; a decision should be made by this April. Rates currently vary amongst Indian states, with Mumbai's Maharashtra state levying high 34 per cent rates on diesel and 30 per cent on petrol. New Delhi said states not-complying with such an order would face cuts in central government grants.
