ICAO GLOBAL EMISSIONS SYSTEM DEAL MAY PREVENT RESURRECTION OF ETS

A GLOBAL market-based system controlling civil aviation greenhouse gas emissions will be developed by 2016, the ruling assembly of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) has agreed. Member states, meeting in Montréal, Canada, said the new system should be up and running by 2020.The decision, which followed intense discussions at the September 24 to October 4 meeting, should prevent the European Union (EU) from fully reactivating the suspended civil aviation portion of the European Emissions Trading System (ETS).
