THE HUNGARIAN government is investigating a sugar import boom it fears may damage local production. Imports rose to 27.9 per cent of consumed sugar in 2003's first quarter, compared with 6.3 per cent the same period in 2002. Hungary may impose protective safeguard duties as a result.
