THE GREEK government has successfully overturned at the European Court of Justice (ECJ) an order from the European Commission that it re-coup a quarter of a Euro 9.9 million European Union (EU) subsidy paid to olive oil producers storing excess stock. Brussels alleged financial control irregularities. These payments were made in Greek islands, such as Rhodes and Lesbos, and the Commission had claimed government inspectors had failed to check whether they were justified by actual production.
