AN IMPORTANT step has been made towards guaranteeing the safety of electric and hybrid cars, with the adoption by the UN's World Forum for Harmonization of Vehicle Regulations of a new technical standard on this subject - a global first. This body is influential. Its technical standards are usually written into European Union (EU) law, and are invariably transposed in automobile construction rules in Japan, South Korea and other European countries. The USA and Canada also often follow its lead in developing auto standards.
