THE EUROPEAN Commission is asking drinks companies for comments on how European Union (EU) legislation on excise duties can be reformed. Brussels has long called for greater harmonisation amongst member states' widely diverging excise duty rates. As a result, in a paper for this public consultation exercise, the Commission focuses on the need to simplify the EU excise duty system, making these taxes easier to pay, levy and account for, rather than on levelling rates.
