THE RANGE of penalties for fraud as well as the exact definitions of the offence that apply throughout western Europe are considerable. Within the European Union (EU) alone for instance, the maximum sentences for fraud range from from “at most two years” in Sweden to up to 12 years in Romania. All 27 EU countries designate imprisonment as a possible sanction for those convicted of fraud though Lithuania sets fines, “restriction of liberty”, community service or custodial arrest for up to three years as options.
