EUROPEAN SPACE AGENCY OFFERS NEW AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SERVICE

BY KEITH NUTHALLSUCCESSFUL trials of a new European Union (EU) satellite navigation service for civil aviation have been staged at Limoges airport, France. An ATR42 test plane has utilised signals from the European Space Agency (ESA), Eurocontrol and European Commission-launched European Geostationary Navigation Overlay Service (EGNOS) for approaches and landings. An ESA note said these manoeuvres met "the safety standards that govern international air traffic...in each case aligning itself with the runway's axis and then following a descent path to touchdown." ...
