EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT RESTRICTS PAINT INDUSTRY WORKER EXPOSURE TO THREE CHEMICAL INGREDIENTS

The European Parliament has voted to amend a directive on protecting workers from the risks posed by carcinogens or mutagens at work by adding worker exposure limits for three paint and coatings chemicals. MEPs backed these caps for trichloroethylene, a paint and adhesive ingredient and paint remover, of 54.7 mg/cubic metre; 4,4'-Methylenedianiline (MDA), which is used to make coating materials, dyes and glues, of 0.08 mg/cubic metre; and Epichlorohydrine (1-chloro-2,3-epoxypropane), used to make epoxy resins used in coatings, of 1.9 mg/cubic metre.
